2006 Playwrighting Contest Winner

Full Length:

The Advocate by Bill Mesce, Jr.

Play Summary:

London, August 1943. Army lawyer Harry Voss is assigned to question fighter pilot
Major Albert Markham over his alleged shooting down of a fellow pilot. Markham
seems too eager to confess, and as Voss continues to probe he comes to suspect
that the one crime is an attempt to conceal another, more horrible crime.

Play History:

Bill began working on THE ADVOCATE first as a novel back in the 1970s. When he failed to get the book published, he adapted it for the stage, and for 23 years he continued to go back and forth between the two, rewriting with each revisiting. After over 150 rejections, Bantam published the novel in 2000 to unanimous critical acclaim, and, largely on the strength of the book's publication, he was finally able to get
the first, full professional production of the play staged in 2003.

About the Author:

A New Jersey native, Bill Mesce, Jr. works in the Corporate Affairs area of Home Box Office where he has been employed for almost 25 years. Throughout his daytime career, he has also worked as a screenwriter, playwright, and author. His most recent book is OVERKILL: THE RISE AND FALL OF THRILLER CINEMA (McFarland), and later this year will see the publication of his novel FOUR DAY SHOOT (Hilliard & Harris).
